A lifelong Liverpool fan, Woods grew up idolizing players like Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Woods’ love for Liverpool was influenced by his family, particularly his father, Dale, who worked as a steward at Anfield, and his brother, Connor, who was once part of Liverpool’s academy and now plays for Warrington Town. Growing up in Skelmersdale, Woods has fond memories of being around Anfield, including one moment when, as a child, he ran onto the pitch during his brother’s academy game. He also recalls meeting Liverpool legend Ian Rush and taking a photo with the 2005 Champions League trophy.

Woods’ journey to professional football wasn’t straightforward. Initially, he pursued a career as a barber, starting to cut hair at 12 and earning money to watch Liverpool matches. He never thought he would become a footballer and spent his teenage years focusing on barbering. However, after playing Sunday league football with friends, he realized his talent. His skills developed, and after impressing with his local team Clay Brow, Woods was invited to train with Accrington Stanley, eventually signing for the club in 2021.

Despite his barbering roots, Woods remains passionate about cutting hair and still gives haircuts to his teammates. On Saturday, however, he will switch from barbering to football as he prepares for one of the biggest moments of his career—playing at Anfield. Accrington’s League Two attendance averages 2,434, but twice that number will travel from Lancashire to support their team at Anfield.

For Woods, the game is a “dream come true.” His excitement was evident when a video of him celebrating Accrington’s FA Cup draw against Liverpool went viral on social media. Despite the emotional significance of the match, Woods remains focused on the task at hand. He acknowledges Liverpool’s strength, with the team sitting at the top of the Premier League and the Champions League, while Accrington is struggling in League Two. Nevertheless, Woods and his team will give their best, knowing they have a tough challenge ahead.

While Woods is thrilled about playing at Anfield, he is clear that it’s not just about the occasion; it’s about performing his job. He hopes to take everything in—from the journey to Liverpool to walking out onto the hallowed turf—but he is also determined to give a strong performance for his team.
